The National Hurricane Center in Miami is currently tracking the season’s latest named storm, Ophelia, the 15th of the current season. As of 5:00 a.m. AST it was about 1020 miles, 1640 kms, east-southeast of the Leeward Islands.
The NHC said Ophelia’s “maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph, 100 km/h with higher gusts.” However, it also forecast a “slow weakening” during the next 48 hours “due to strong upper-level winds.
“Ophelia is moving toward the west near 14 mph, 22 km/h, and this motion is expected to continue today, with a turn to the west-northwest expected on Friday.
If it keeps to that forecast track, it should pose no immediate threat to any land mass.
