The National Hurricane Center in Miami is currently tracking Bret, the second named tropical storm of the season. Unless it changes course, which is highly unlikely, Bret poses no threat to the U.S. mainland, as it is heading into the middle of the Atlantic.
The storm is currently about 90 miles (145 kms) northeast of Great Abaco Island, and is moving north-northeast at around 5 to 7 mph (8 to 11.2 km/h). Maximum sustained winds are around 50 mph (85 km/h).
The NHC said a “tropical storm warning is in effect for Grand Bahama Island and the Abaco Islands in the northwest Bahamas.”
Bret’s forward speed is expected to increase, but wind speeds in the area covered by the tropical storm warning are expected to decrease, as the storm moves out into the Atlantic.
