Firefighters said they evacuated hundreds of people Monday from homes and businesses in flood-hit areas in northern England.
About 60 homes were flooded near Huddersfield, 190 miles (305 kilometers) northwest of London, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said. In nearby Silsden, 100 people were evacuated from a factory.
The Environment Agency has issued warnings for several communities in the region, warning that river levels were expected to peak Tuesday. About 30 millimeters to 50 millimeters (1.18 to 1.97 inches) of rain was expected Monday.
“Some flooding is likely to happen in the region, but at this stage it is not thought to be as widespread or significant as the summer floods,” the agency’s regional flood risk manager Mark Tinnion said.
Last year, hundreds of thousands of people were affected by water and electricity shortages as rivers and drainage systems were overcome by the country’s worst inundation in more than a half-century.
