London-based weather analyst Tropical Storm Risk (TSR) has predicted more storm activity in the Atlantic this year than previously expected, with the possible formation of 6 potentially deadly hurricanes from a total of 13 tropical disturbances.

TSR is supported by the insurance industry, the U.K. Meteorological Service and works with University College London. The new predictions are partially based on last year’s remarkable good luck. Many hurricanes in fact formed, but only one, Gordon, hit the U.S., which suffered a relatively minor $30 million in damages from tropical storms in 2000. By comparison TSR puts the annual average loss figure at $5.2 billion.
