A volunteer with the Hartland fire company was killed on Tuesday evening when a fire truck she was helping to direct reversed into her, authorities said.
The Niagara County Sheriff’s office said several fire companies were responding to a fire in a field in Somerset, New York, when a Barker Fire Department rescue truck was backing up on the road.
Around 8:40 p.m., the truck hit and ran over the volunteer, who was acting as a spotter for the driver. Authorities said she died from her injuries.
The sheriff’s office did not name the person who was killed or the driver on Wednesday. The sheriff’s accident investigation unit is still investigating and no charges have been filed, authorities said.
Somerset is located about 39 miles east of Niagara Falls, New York, near the shore of Lake Ontario.
