Police in Northfield, Vermont, are investigating the death of a man who was hit by the passing Amtrak Vermonter passenger train.
WCAX-TV reports a resident in the Vermont town was at a pedestrian crossing in downtown Northfield when he stumbled and tripped on the tracks shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday. The southbound train could not stop in time to avoid the victim, said to be in his 50s.
The name of the victim has not been released.
Amtrak Spokesman Jason Abrams confirmed the incident, but referred questions to Northfield police, who are leading the investigation.
The train was delayed while the incident was investigated.
In 2015, seven people were injured when the Amtrak Vermonters derailed in Northfield after a piece of ledge broke off and fell onto the tracks.
