A Vermont town’s select board has voted to work with a national law firm that plans to sue opioid makers over the drug crisis.
The Bennington Banner reports Bennington will not have to pay for litigation as part of the agreement with Sanford Heisler Sharp.
The law firm says instead it will accept 25 percent of damages won from opioid manufacturers, with 75 percent of damages going back into the community.
Sanford Heisler Sharp says it will work by gathering data to determine the cost of the drug crisis to Bennington. If the costs are significant enough, the law firm will then file a lawsuit in state court.
The firm says its attorneys have begun similar discussions with other Vermont communities including Manchester and Rutland.
