A legal dispute is brewing between insurance company Liberty Mutual and Keurig Green Mountain, the maker of single-cup coffee machines.
The Boston-based insurer has filed a lawsuit that alleges that a Massachusetts woman’s Keurig coffee machine was responsible for a fire that caused $100,000 worth of smoke damage to her Upton home.
Liberty Mutual paid the claim but now wants Waterbury, Vermont-based Keurig Green Mountain to pay up.
Liberty Mutual said in the suit filed in Boston that Keurig’s K70 model “was defective and unreasonably dangerous and therefore not fit for intended use.”
A spokeswoman for Keurig tells The Boston Globe that safety is a company priority and “We are generally unaware of our brewers being the cause of any fires.”
The K70 model has been discontinued.
