Authorities say crews have established a control line around a wildfire that’s burned thousands of acres in central Virginia’s George Washington and Thomas Jefferson national forests.
The U.S. Forest Service said in a news release Saturday that while the fire has not been brought completely under control, it is no longer spreading. The forest service says crews are continuing to secure those control lines and protect buildings that are threatened by the fire.
The forest service says resources will be concentrated on the north side of the fire on Saturday, with crews conducting mop-up operations on the west and southwest sides of the fire. Operations were expected to continue into the night.
The fire in has burned at least 7,200 acres of the national forests in Amherst County.
