Federal environmental regulators say they’re trying to contain and remove as much as 200,000 gallons of dangerous liquid chemicals and compounds found in storage tanks at two abandoned industrial properties in Waterbury.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tells the Republican-American it has authorized $1.8 million to remove the chemicals, which includes more than 3,000 gallons of cyanide and 20,000 gallons of strong acids. There are also bases and oils.

Officials say most of the chemicals will be removed within weeks. Overall cleanup of the tanks could take up to eight months.

The chemicals were found amid city plans to clean and redevelop the industrial land.

Mayor Neil O’Leary says he plans to work with fire officials to see if there are similar hazards elsewhere.
