Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin is urging teenage drivers to not use their cell phones while driving as part of the fourth annual “It Can Wait” campaign in the state.
Kilmartin kicked off this year’s effort on Sept. 25 at Exeter-West Greenwich High School in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. He said the program was primarily aimed at texting while driving when it began, but as technology evolved more types of distracted driving have been added to the not-to-do list including taking selfies, checking email and viewing and recording video.
More than nine people die and more than 1,100 are injured every day in the United States in accidents involving distracted drivers, accord to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“It Can Wait” is a national campaign promoted by AT&T and police and government agencies.
