The former mayor of Roselle, New Jersey, has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for insurance fraud over false reports made after a hit-and-run accident.
NJ.com reports that Garrett Smith was sentenced on April 10 after filing false reports with the borough police and an insurance company after the December 2010 accident. He pleaded guilty previously to a second-degree offense.
Smith was driving in his mother’s 2001 Lincoln Towncar after leaving a bar and crashed into a parked vehicle. He then drove home and later called police to say that the car had been hit.
Smith’s lawyer, Thomas Ashley, had asked the judged for probation. He cited the work Smith has done for children and seniors.
Smith apologized to Superior Court Judge Robert Mega and was led out of the courtroom by two sheriff’s officers.
