Maryland officials say traffic deaths have hit a 66-year low in the state.
Transportation officials said at a news conference Tuesday that traffic deaths in Maryland fell to 442 last year. That’s the lowest amount of traffic deaths in the state since 1948.
The year with the most traffic deaths was 1968, with 872 fatalities.
Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn attributed the drop to targeted enforcement on the roads and laws aimed at impaired and distracted driving. Officials also cite technological advances in lifesaving medical care.
Rahn says in a statement that the low number of traffic fatalities means everyone can make a difference to save lives.
