Zurich North America said its employee volunteers will join St. Bernard Project, a nonprofit disaster recovery group based in New Orleans, for an around-the-clock, 24-hour home rebuilding project in Rockaway, New York, on the two-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy.
Volunteers from Zurich North America, St. Bernard Project and its New York affiliate Friends of Rockaway will work from 2 p.m. Oct. 28 to 2 p.m. Oct. 29 on rebuilding a home damaged two years ago by Sandy.
Volunteers will work on rebuilding the home of Rockaway resident Doreen Stack. The night Sandy came through, a storm surge slammed two boats and a large shipping container into her house, and the water and debris filled the first floor. A subsequent 11-foot storm surge swept away the backyard oil tank and fence. Stack and her family remain on the property, living in a trailer.
Construction on the Rockaway home will be nonstop and involve three shifts of volunteers, with the 24-hour project ending on the two-year anniversary of Sandy.
This marks Zurich’s second 24-hour home rebuild in New York City, and one of more than 100 homes rebuilt in Sandy-impacted communities by St. Bernard Project with support from Zurich, according to the announcement.
