The family of a Salem man who died of meningitis has settled a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit against a Roanoke, Virginia, clinic.
The Roanoke Times reports that Douglas Wingate’s family agreed to settle the lawsuit for an undisclosed sum.
Wingate’s family sued Insight Imagining in December 2012. The lawsuit said Wingate died in September 2012 after he was injected with a steroid shot with tainted meningitis.
The lawsuit claimed the clinic told patients they were getting a safe, name-brand drug instead of a generic substitute.
The settlement petition says Insight didn’t admit liability.
Wingate was among 64 people in 20 states who died during a meningitis outbreak. A Massachusetts pharmacy linked to the outbreak filed for bankruptcy and gave up its license after it was flooded with lawsuits.
