The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved the first stage of Rhode Island’s disaster recovery plan following Superstorm Sandy.
The initial plan, funded through HUD’s community development block grant program, calls for spending $625,600 on housing and infrastructure in Washington and Newport counties. The state’s overall plan calls for $3.2 million to meet housing, infrastructure, job creation, disaster recovery planning and other needs in areas affected by the storm.
HUD New England Regional Administrator Barbara Fields announced the approval on Thursday.
Southern portions of Rhode Island experienced some severe impacts to homes and businesses, public buildings, roads and bridges.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has provided $6.5 million in individual and public assistance to the state so far.
