Heavy Rains Trap Connecticut Shoreline Residents in Cars, Homes

Quick, heavy rains have led to flash flooding along Connecticut’s shoreline, trapping some residents in their cars, homes and businesses.

West Haven Center District Fire Chief James O’Brien tells the New Haven Register his department used rowboats last Friday to rescue several drivers caught in water that in some cases rose to their car windows.

The Milford Fire Department says they rescued more than 20 people stuck in their cars after 5 inches of rain fell. Stratford Assistant Fire Chief Douglas Reitmeyer tells the Hartford Courant his department rescued about 30 stranded motorists.

Milford Mayor Benjamin Blake calls it the worst flooding that town has seen in decades. He says more than 20 businesses, the lower level of a shopping mall, and part of City Hall were under water last Friday afternoon.
