An investigation into employee theft at the Mark Twain House & Museum in Connecticut shows the organization lost more than $500,000. Executive Director Jeff Nichols told The Hartford Courant that an audit revealed losses exceeding the amount covered by insurance.
Nichols said the Hartford museum is reviewing its money handling practices and an accounting contractor has been hired.
Museum officials said in 2010 an employee left following the discovery of financial irregularities and Hartford police were notified.
The museum has not released the employee’s name.
A review of the museums tax filings in 2009 by The Commercial Record, a business magazine, reported museum losses from theft of more than $750,000.
