Therese Goldsmith has been appointed as Maryland’s insurance commissioner.
She most recently served as commissioner of the Public Service Commission of Maryland. She was previously a partner in the law firm Hogan & Hartson, where she served as part of the firm’s white collar litigation practice group. Before that, she was a lawyer with Venable, Baetjer and Howard
As commissioner, she will lead the Maryland Insurance Administration, which regulates Maryland’s insurance industry and ensures companies, health plans and producers comply with Maryland insurance law.
Goldsmith, who takes over on June 13, replaces Acting Commissioner Beth Sammis who took over the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) in January 2010 following the departure of Commissioner Ralph Tyler.
