Baltimore fire and rescue officials say a contractor performing work on an underground sewer line who fell into an eight- to 10-foot hole is dead.
Fire department spokesman Kevin Cartwright says paramedics who responded to the Saturday incident on East Coldspring Lane pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Cartwright says the man in his late 20s. Rescue workers believe he fell into the hole and the dirt walls collapsed, burying him up to his waist.
Paramedics found him unconscious and without a pulse in cardiac arrest.
Cartwright says fire and rescue workers are now shoring up the exterior walls of the trench to prevent further collapse.
