Massachusetts is opening its first Registry branch on the Turnpike.
The change comes amid a consolidation drive that includes closing 11 Registry of Motor Vehicles branches. The one in Southbridge closed Friday.
It’s being replaced by a branch in the state-owned service plaza on the Massachusetts Turnpike’s eastbound service plaza in Charlton, which will open Monday morning.
Registry officials say its part of their plan to “create a more efficient transportation organization to deliver one-stop-shopping customer service.”
They also say they will save $1.7 million by closing high-cost branches such as that in Southbridge and moving to vacant or under-utilized facilities owned or operated by the Turnpike, Massachusetts Highway Department, the MBTA and Massport.
