The Connecticut Insurance Department says it recovered nearly $3.1 million on behalf of consumers last year – on par with previous year’s recoveries from resolving consumers’ disputes and complaints.
“We are here to help, and I think this demonstrates that the efforts of our Consumer Affairs teams are working with Connecticut consumers,” Commissioner Thomas Sullivan said.
The bulk of the recovered money came from three lines of insurance – accident and health, which accounted fro $1.7 million, life and annuities which accounted for $480,000, and auto lines which accounted for $258,000
Seventy percent of complaints to the department were over accident and health lines, while auto lines accounted for 17 percent of complaints.
More than half of all complaints were related to unfair claims practices.
