Environmental officials say a settlement has been reached to complete the cleanup of the Shpack landfill in Norton and Attleboro, Massachusetts
The landfill is a federal Superfund site contaminated with chemical and radioactive wastes.
The U.S. Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday that several companies who are deemed “responsible parties” by the EPA have signed an agreement to perform the remainder of the cleanup, estimated to cost $29 million.
Under a consent decree in federal court in Boston, they also agreed to pay up to $2.9 million in costs EPA has already incurred in the cleanup.
A portion of the site received industrial and household waste from 1946 to 1975.
