Planned renovations to the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware boardwalk will make it possible for fire trucks to drive on it.
Boardwalk Committee Chairman Stan Mills says reinforcements to the center section will allow it support 20 tons, enough for a small fire truck. Without that enhancement, fire trucks would have to fight a boardwalk fire from nearby streets.
Mills says most sections of the boardwalk can support only 5 tons.
Preliminary plans call for additional support beams under a 12-foot-wide lane down the boardwalk in the business district.
Although Mills says he would like the entire boardwalk to have the additional support, but he says such upgrades would be too costly.
