Firefighters have been able to keep a southern New Jersey forest fire from spreading, though they have not been able to contain it entirely or put it out.

The fire in a remote section of the Wharton State Forest in Camden County’s Waterford Township, has burned about 100 acres since it began Monday morning.

Department of Environmental Affairs spokeswoman Darlene Yuhas says that number was unchanged from Monday afternoon until midday Tuesday. She says the fire is about 50 percent contained.

Crews have been using a helicopter to dump water on hot spots from above.

The fire is more than 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia in an area west of Route 206 and north of Route 536.
