Text-messaging while driving could be outlawed if a northern Virginia lawmaker gets his wish.
Delegate James Scott, a Falls Church Democrat, has proposed a bill that would make it illegal for people to send text messages _ electronic messages via mobile phone _ while operating an automobile.
If passed, it would make Virginia one of a few states to ban text messaging while driving
Washington became the first state to do so last year.
Scott’s bill also would ban texting by people riding bicycles and mopeds.
It covers anyone who would be “sending, receiving or reading” text messages.
The bill goes before the General Assembly next week.
