Ceremonies attended by civic leaders and representatives of Travelers and Citigroup marked the completion of the first building in the revitalization plan for Hartford’s Mortson Street and Putnam Heights.
The area, where many buildings have been abandoned or destroyed, is being renewed in an $11.2 million rehabilitation project, which envisions the reconstruction and refurbishing of 53 one and two family dwellings.
“Citigroup, including Travelers, Citigroup Center for Community Development Enterprise (CCDE), CitiMortgage and the Citigroup Foundation, have agreed to provide up to $7 million in funding,” said a company announcement.
CCDE Director of Community Lending in Connecticut Geoffrey Siedor stated that “this is just one example of our commitment to the city we have called home since Travelers first opened its doors 137 years ago.”
He underscored the company’s goal of revitalizing Hartford and building up home ownership, which, according to Siedor, is currently the lowest in the country.
