The Alabama Veterans of Foreign Wars will receive a reimbursement of $42,000, which will be distributed to VFW posts state-wide, due to a lawsuit settlement with the Alabama Insurance Commission.
The AIC lawsuit claimed that the VFW violated state regulations concerning insurance transactions. In the settlement, the VFW states that it “in no way intended to violate any insurance law or regulation and that it desired to resolve all matters” related to the order of insurance bonds.
In October, a Limestone County grand jury indicted VFW Quartermaster Travis Whaley of Alexandria on charges of insurance fraud. Whaley’s April trial will revolve around his order to remove local VFW, Commander Larry Truman and District Commander Jim Manley, both of Athens. The indictment stems from surety bonds sold to the Limestone County chapter. The settlement means Limestone County VFW Post 4765 will receive $1,200 as its share.
