A Bristol, Connecticut insurance broker agreed to run as the Republican candidate in the 79th Assembly District race to honor the original candidate who apparently took his own life right before the election.
David L. Norton said he was not in the race to win it. Rather, he wanted to honor the memory of the late Derek Jerome Sr., who believed voters should have a choice and that nobody should run unopposed.
Norton, an insurance broker, said incumbent Democrat Rep. Frank Nicastro is doing a great job. Voters agreed- Nicastro won with 75 percent of the vote.
Thirty-eight-year-old Jerome left a note indicating he was upset about financial problems and other issues. He was found dead in his garage, where his antique Cadillac convertible had been left running.
