Kentucky Explores ATV Accidents

July 7, 2008

Kentucky led the nation in all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related deaths in 2007, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The frequency of injuries and fatalities caught University of Kentucky hospital surgeon Andrew Bernard’s attention. He’s hoping a study he’s started at the hospital will give some insight into how to better protect and educate ATV enthusiasts.

Researchers are working with young riders to learn the cause of severe injuries and death.

Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman Steve Wolfson says determining which ATV is right for a rider instead of just having them ride whatever is available could help.
